Respect for the environment is an essential part of Serveis Ferroviaris de Mallorca’s values and one of the company’s strategic objectives. It addresses the need to tackle the environmental challenges set out in the Sustainable Sustainable Development Goals of the 2030 Agenda adopted by the United Nations General Assembly.

This Environmental Policy is defined as the foundation for respecting the environment, considering the nature, scope, and impacts of the main activities entrusted to Serveis Ferroviaris de Mallorca: the management and operation of rail services within the scope of the powers of the Government of the Balearic Islands. It includes carrying out works for the expansion, renovation, or improvement of the railroad infrastructure of the Balearic Islands’ general-interest railroad network, as well as its maintenance.

In this regard, Serveis Ferroviaris de Mallorca is committed to fulfilling the following commitments in its environmental policy:

• Sustainable mobility. Serveis Ferroviaris de Mallorca is committed to sustainable mobility and promotes public transport as a viable alternative to road transport, viewing rail as an efficient, effective, and accessible mode that contributes to emission reductions and ensures fair mobility for all.
• Reduction in electricity consumption from non-renewable sources.Electricity is the primary form of energy consumed in our operations, so the goal is to optimize consumption needs in our activities. Additionally, and on a complementary basis, Serveis Ferroviaris de Mallorca is committed to installing its own renewable energy generation facilities.
• Water conservation and efficient use plan.Thru the implementation of a Plan that ensures sustainable water consumption. Water-saving mechanisms and measures are established in all Serveis Ferroviaris de Mallorca facilities, thereby contributing to the sustainable use of a limited resource such as water.
• Circular economy. In all works, services, and supplies, criteria for reusing surplus materials that may arise because of their execution are considered from the project or activity definition phase.
• Proper waste management. Serveis Ferroviaris de Mallorca manages waste in accordance with current regulations and aims for continuous improvement in waste management by reducing the amount of waste generated during operations and, above all, in the construction and maintenance works of railroad infrastructure and rolling stock.
• Reduction of greenhouse gas emissions. SFM conducts periodic monitoring of potential greenhouse gas emission sources and of emissions resulting from its activities, to reduce its carbon footprint and contribute to mitigating climate change.
• Noise and vibration control. Despite the difficulty involved, SFM strives to keep noise and vibrations from rail traffic within acceptable thresholds, setting long-term emission reduction targets.
• Fire prevention. Railroad lines can serve as a physical barrier to the spread of fires. SFM carries out periodic vegetation control along the track margins to prevent fires.
• Contribution to biodiversity conservation. SFM contributes to biodiversity conservation by incorporating compensatory measures into its projects that benefit native species, as well as by adopting measures to protect wildlife.

The commitments of the Environmental Policy form the framework within which Serveis Ferroviaris de Mallorca’s environmental objectives and targets are established, with the aim of contributing to environmental improvement and achieving the sustainability of the rail system.
