The remodelling of Pont d’Inca station improves rail access, restores heritage and creates new spaces for community use
With the works now completed, the Government of the Balearic Islands has fully refurbished the station’s four historic buildings, improved access to train services and modernised the surrounding outdoor areas
The station complex will host the new headquarters of the Railway Enthusiasts Association and promote new community-oriented uses
The Regional Minister for Housing, Territory and Mobility, José Luis Mateo, visited Pont d’Inca railway station today following the completion of the refurbishment works carried out on the complex of historic station buildings, a project promoted by the Government of the Balearic Islands and Serveis Ferroviaris de Mallorca (SFM).
Also attending the visit were the Mayor of Marratxí, Jaume Llompart; the Director General for Mobility of the Balearic Government, Lorena del Valle; the SFM General Manager, José Ramón Orta; and the President of the Railway Enthusiasts Association of the Balearic Islands, Miquel Àngel Riera.
The project included the full refurbishment of the four buildings that make up the historic station complex, improvements to rail access to platform 1, and the modernisation of both the façades and the surrounding outdoor environment.
Among the works carried out were the reorganisation of passenger access routes, the renovation of the roofs, improvements to the station square and lighting system, and the recovery of interior spaces for new service-oriented uses.
The project involved a total investment of €444,117, co-financed through the insularity factor funds of the Special Regime for the Balearic Islands, and stems from the collaboration agreement signed between SFM and Marratxí Town Council. The initiative aims to enhance the value of a key railway infrastructure asset while improving both the quality of the service and its surrounding environment.
As a result of the project, Pont d’Inca station now includes new facilities for internal SFM uses, such as office space and support areas for station maintenance operations. In addition, the complex will host an office for the new staff responsible for developing the communication, sociocultural outreach and railway heritage dissemination programme promoted by SFM, aimed at bringing the railway closer to the public and highlighting its historical and cultural legacy.
Regarding the new premises assigned to the Railway Enthusiasts Association of the Balearic Islands, the space will become a meeting point and reference centre for railway enthusiasts in Mallorca. The new headquarters will allow the organisation to centralise its activities and promote initiatives related to the dissemination and preservation of railway heritage.
The premises will host conferences, talks and debates linked to the railway sector and railway modelling, as well as a scale model of Pont d’Inca station. It will also feature display cabinets containing historical documentation and materials belonging to the association, together with a specialised library of more than 400 volumes available for consultation.
The relocation of the association’s headquarters, previously based at Palma Intermodal Station, will allow it to carry out its activities under improved conditions while also facilitating the reorganisation of spaces linked to the future refurbishment project at Palma Intermodal Station.
Through this initiative, the Government of the Balearic Islands reaffirms its commitment to improving railway infrastructure, restoring public heritage and creating spaces with social value for the municipality of Marratxí.
