SFM increases investment in train maintenance by 40% to €26 million to strengthen safety
The new contract, already awarded and in force, improves fleet availability and speeds up response to incidents
Serveis Ferroviaris de Mallorca (SFM) has launched a new comprehensive maintenance contract for its railway rolling stock, with an investment of €26,094,928.92 (excluding VAT). This figure of over €26 million represents an increase of more than 40% compared to the previous contract.
The service in place until now, awarded in 2021, reached a total investment of nearly €17.7 million. The new contract, already awarded and operational, has an initial duration of four years, with the possibility of a one-year extension.
This increase in resources reflects the commitment of the Government of the Balearic Islands to continue strengthening an essential public service and adapting it to the current needs of the railway network.
The new model incorporates more comprehensive coverage of all maintenance tasks. It includes periodic inspections, incident resolution, on-track assistance, and workshop management, offering an integrated approach that allows for greater anticipation and coordination.
One of the most notable changes is the reinforcement of preventive maintenance, enabling potential issues to be detected before they affect service. At the same time, incident response capacity is improved, with teams ready to intervene more quickly.
The operation of workshops and technical teams has also been reorganized, with the aim of reducing the time trains are out of service for scheduled maintenance and improving their availability. This has a direct impact on service regularity and punctuality.
The contract, awarded to the consortium formed by Erion Mantenimiento Ferroviario and Stadler Rail Ibérica, places particular emphasis on the quality of interventions and components used, applying stricter criteria that contribute to greater overall fleet reliability.
Another new feature is the promotion of continuous staff training, with specific programs to keep technical knowledge up to date and strengthen operational protocols, especially in terms of safety.
In addition, the contract includes maintenance of the new Series 1100 once the warranty period has ended, with a current cost of around €1 million, in line with the ongoing renewal of the rolling stock.
With this contract, the Government reinforces safety as the central pillar of the railway system and consolidates its commitment to more reliable and efficient public transport.
