SFM continues its conference series at the Términus building next Wednesday with the lecture “Traditional Society and the Railway: the Mallorcan Case”
Historian Miguel Deyá will analyse the economic, social and cultural impact of the arrival of the railway in Mallorca
Serveis Ferroviaris de Mallorca (SFM) will continue its conference series at the Términus building next Wednesday with the lecture “Traditional Society and the Railway: the Mallorcan Case”, delivered by historian and researcher Miguel Deyá, who will analyse the economic, social and cultural impact that the arrival of the railway had on the island of Mallorca.
The lecture, which will take place next Wednesday, 28 January, from 6:00 pm on the ground floor of the Términus building, forms part of the conference programme launched last December following the inauguration of this historic building, which has been fully refurbished and now hosts the new headquarters of Serveis Ferroviaris de Mallorca.
During the session, historian and researcher Miguel Deyá will explain how the introduction of the railway brought about a profound transformation in a traditional society such as Mallorca’s. Beyond the integration of the island’s internal market, the railway connection with the Port of Palma played a key role in boosting exports, while also requiring significant capital investment to make its development possible.
The conference will also address lesser-known aspects, such as the cultural and social impact the railway had on the population of the time, the transformation of everyday habits and the emergence of new professions linked to the railway sector, elements that complement the strictly economic analysis.
Miguel Deyá holds a PhD in History from the Universitat de les Illes Balears (UIB) and has an extensive academic and research background, particularly in the field of economic and social history, which will provide attendees with a rigorous yet accessible overview of one of the most significant processes of change in contemporary Mallorca.
Through this conference series, which will continue throughout 2026, SFM aims to explore both the historical and contemporary social narrative of the island, as well as analyse the evolution of mobility in Mallorca, with particular attention to the railway and its role in transforming Mallorcan society.
The lecture is open to the public until full capacity is reached. The venue has an approximate capacity of 50 people.
