Mallorca’s interurban public transport closes 2025 with a new passenger record and more resident users than ever before

The Government of the Balearic Islands reports on 2025 transport figures: 41.3 million journeys on the TIB bus network, train and metro services; a 5% year-on-year increase and 23% more than two years ago

The number of resident users has risen to 31.5 million, accounting for 76% of all passengers — a new historic high — with 23 million more resident journeys than in 2019

The Government of the Balearic Islands closed 2025 with a new all-time record for passengers using Mallorca’s interurban public transport network and with more resident users than ever before travelling by train, metro and TIB bus services. The total number of journeys exceeded the 40 million mark for the first time, reaching 41.3 million trips, representing a 5% year-on-year increase and a 23% rise over the last two years. Resident users accounted for 76% of all passengers.

The number of resident users rose to 31.5 million, an increase of 8% compared with the previous year and 23.5 million more resident passenger journeys — almost 300% more — compared with 2019, the year before the Covid-19 pandemic.

The Regional Minister for Housing, Territory and Mobility, José Luis Mateo, presented the figures during the 2025 annual review of the autonomous public transport network, including train, metro and interurban bus services in Mallorca.

“It is a positive balance in terms of promoting public transport as an alternative to private vehicle use, with significant improvements both in the TIB bus network and in train and metro services, mainly focused on our residents,” he stated during a press conference alongside the Director General for Mobility, Lorena del Valle; the General Manager of the Consorci de Transports de Mallorca, Lluïsa Serra; and the General Manager of Serveis Ferroviaris de Mallorca, José Ramón Orta.

Last year, Mallorca’s interurban public transport network continued its upward passenger trend, with resident users showing the strongest growth. Overall, journeys across the TIB network — including bus, train and metro services — increased by 5% year-on-year to reach 41.3 million.

The increase among resident users was even higher, rising by 8% to 31.5 million journeys. This figure represents 76% of all passengers, the highest proportion of resident users ever recorded on the island’s public transport network, including users travelling with the Intermodal Card, the new Unified Public Transport Card for Mallorca and Palma’s Citizen Card.

Continued growth during the fare-free travel period

The new annual record of 41.3 million journeys represents a 23% increase compared with 2023 (33.4 million journeys) and confirms the continued growth in passenger numbers recorded between full years in which fare-free travel measures have remained in place, as already occurred last year. This demonstrates that the increase is not solely linked to fare subsidies, but also reflects the improvements introduced to the TIB interurban bus network and to Mallorca’s train and metro services during this period.

Compared with previous years, passenger numbers have increased by 153% in relation to 2019 (16.3 million journeys), the year before the Covid-19 pandemic. In the case of resident users, the increase since 2019 has reached 294%, rising from 8 million to 31.5 million journeys, an increase of 23.5 million resident passengers in the Balearic Islands.

All public transport modes recorded passenger growth last year. Of the total 41.3 million journeys during 2025, almost 30 million corresponded to the TIB bus network (29.7 million journeys, up 5%), while train services reached 9.2 million passengers (4% more than the previous year) and the metro recorded 2.4 million journeys, representing the highest percentage increase, up 11% compared with 2024.

Regarding passenger profiles, resident users accounted for 94% of all train and metro passengers and 68% of interurban TIB bus passengers, with increases in resident users of 6% and 9%, respectively.

More than 608,000 residents now hold an Intermodal or Unified Transport Card

At the end of 2025, a total of 608,229 residents held either the Intermodal Card or the new Unified Public Transport Card for Mallorca. This represents an increase of 17% compared with the previous year.

Last year, from October onwards, the Government began issuing the Unified Card, the new integrated public transport pass covering the entire public transport network on the island, including the TIB network (interurban bus, train and metro services) as well as Palma’s EMT city bus network.

Since the launch of the Unified Card at the beginning of October, almost 70,300 cards have been issued, more than 51,000 of which correspond to first-time users. Since last week, the Government and the Ajuntament de Palma have reinforced the issuing service for the Unified Card at Palma Intermodal Station in order to double the number of available appointments, operating from Monday to Saturday both morning and afternoon.

2025 improvements: increased bus services, reinforced train and metro operations and a new Parc Bit station

Throughout the past year, the Government introduced improvements to the interurban TIB bus network, increasing service capacity and fleet size through more frequent services and, for the first time, maintaining regular Aerotib airport bus services during the low season between several inland municipalities and the airport.

Improvements were also introduced to train and metro services, including peak-hour reinforcements, the opening of the metro extension from the Universitat de les Illes Balears (UIB) to the new Parc Bit station, and a continued increase in special services for events, local festivities and the Christmas period, among other measures.

Regarding the TIB bus network, improvements were introduced on 38% of routes through the addition of more buses (six new vehicles), increased frequencies and extended operating hours, based on demand criteria. Bus service capacity increased by 2.1% compared with the previous year, mainly due to modifications made to concession contracts, which increased overall service capacity by 50% compared with the original 2021 contracts.

Among other measures, regular Aerotib airport bus services were maintained for the first time during the winter months, connecting the airport with the main population centres in inland Mallorca, including the areas of Manacor, Inca, Alcúdia, Calvià and Campos.

As for train and metro services, the Government reinforced operations during peak hours from March onwards, introducing two additional morning train services and two additional metro services at midday, which were added to the four extra morning services already introduced in September 2024.

In mid-2025, from July onwards, the new extension of the UIB metro line to the new Parc Bit station entered into operation. In addition, throughout the year, Serveis Ferroviaris de Mallorca increased special services by 19%, with reinforcements operating on 56 days to provide additional coverage for events, popular festivities and weekend services during late November and December.

Special services during the Christmas period also increased by 19%, with additional reinforcements on 24 and 31 December, including services on 25 and 26 December, New Year’s Day and Epiphany.
