SFM will hold the closing events of the 150th anniversary of Mallorca’s railway next Saturday in Palma and Inca

Activities will take place throughout the day and will culminate with a concert by Nacha Pop next to Palma Intermodal Station

Serveis Ferroviaris de Mallorca (SFM) will celebrate next Saturday, 21 February, the closing events marking the 150th anniversary of the launch of the first railway service in Mallorca, which began operating between Palma and Inca in 1875.

The programme will include the presentation of prizes for the photography and drawing competitions organised as part of the anniversary celebrations held throughout the year, as well as a major concert by Nacha Pop next to Palma Intermodal Station. In addition, children’s entertainment activities and musical performances will take place throughout the morning in Inca.

The celebration will run throughout the entire day in Palma and Inca, with the collaboration of both local councils. In Inca, activities will take place during the morning from 10:00 am in Antoni Fluxà Square, where SFM, in collaboration with the Ajuntament d'Inca, has organised children’s entertainment activities together with musical performances by Tardes en el Café and DJ Alfabetagama.

The festive programme will culminate with the event scheduled in Palma, which will take place at the entrance to Ses Estacions Park from Plaça d’Espanya, in the pergola area, from 5:00 pm onwards. The event will begin with the presentation of prizes for the photography and drawing competitions promoted by SFM as part of the anniversary activities organised throughout the year. The winning works will remain on display from Saturday 21 February in the metro platform area of Palma Intermodal Station. The highlight of the evening will be the concert by Nacha Pop.

In 2025, Mallorca marked the 150th anniversary of the arrival of the railway on the island. The first journey was operated by the steam locomotive Nasmith Wilson of the Mallorca Railway Company between Palma and Inca, on a line inaugurated on 24 February 1875 and the only railway route to have operated continuously from the final quarter of the nineteenth century to the present day. The arrival of the railway on the island contributed to an unprecedented economic, social and cultural transformation.

With the aim of recognising the role of the railway in society, promoting its history and highlighting Mallorca’s railway heritage, the Government of the Balearic Islands and Serveis Ferroviaris de Mallorca have organised a wide range of activities throughout the year.

The travelling exhibition “150 Years of Railways in Mallorca”, first presented at Palma Intermodal Station during the inauguration event in February 2025, has toured several municipalities across the island, including Inca, Sa Pobla, Manacor, Sineu, Lloseta, Llucmajor and Sant Llorenç, while talks and conferences have also been organised in different parts of Mallorca throughout the year.

One particularly significant milestone took place on 12 November with the inauguration of the Museu del Ferrocarril de Mallorca, located in Son Carrió, in the municipality of Sant Llorenç des Cardassar. Public participation initiatives, such as the competitions organised during the commemorative year, have complemented an emotional anniversary programme filled with memorable activities.
