The Government will install secure parking facilities for bicycles and scooters in Inca, Sa Pobla, Llucmajor, Manacor and Consell next to TIB bus stops and train stations
Minister Mateo meets with local councils to launch the first phase of this measure aimed at promoting intermodality among public transport users
The new facilities, featuring 20 lockers for bicycles and scooters in each municipality, will be available by mid-summer and represent an investment of € 260.000
The Government of the Balearic Islands will install secure parking facilities for bicycles and scooters in several municipalities across Mallorca — Inca, Sa Pobla, Llucmajor, Manacor and Consell — next to bus stops on the TIB network or railway stations on the island’s rail network. The Regional Minister for Housing, Territory and Mobility, José Luis Mateo, today chaired a meeting with the local councils involved to launch this initiative, which aims to improve intermodality among public transport users.
During this first phase, the Government is processing the installation of bicycle and scooter parking facilities at TIB network bus stops in the municipalities of Inca, Sa Pobla and Llucmajor, and at railway stations in Manacor and Consell. The initiative will operate initially as a pilot project in these five municipalities in order to assess its performance before extending the system to other areas. The first five facilities, each equipped with lockers for bicycles and scooters, are expected to be operational by mid-summer this year.
The new facilities will include 20 individual lockers for bicycles and scooters, equipped with electronic locks and internal charging sockets. The modules are expected to be installed by mid-summer, with the estimated procurement budget allocated by the Consorci de Transports de Mallorca amounting to €260,000, financed through the insularity factor funds established under the Special Regime for the Balearic Islands. The project forms part of the “Illes en Transformació” investment plan promoted by the Government.
According to Minister José Luis Mateo, the initiative aims to improve intermodality and make it easier for public transport users to combine their journeys with bicycles or scooters in a convenient and secure manner. The meeting was attended by representatives from the local governments of Manacor and Llucmajor, as well as the Director General for Mobility, Lorena del Valle; the General Manager of the Consorci de Transports de Mallorca, Luisa Serra; and the General Manager of Serveis Ferroviaris de Mallorca, José Ramón Orta.
In the case of Inca, Llucmajor and Sa Pobla, the parking facilities will be located next to TIB network bus stops, specifically at the Inca Llevant 1, Llucmajor Oest 1 and Sa Pobla Ronda Nord stops. In these cases, the Government and the three local councils have signed collaboration agreements. In Manacor and Consell, meanwhile, the bicycle and scooter lockers will be installed at train stations managed by Serveis Ferroviaris de Mallorca.
Regarding these agreements, they establish the framework of cooperation between the CTM and the local councils for regulating the installation, maintenance and management of the facilities. The Consortium will be responsible for procurement, installation, commissioning and maintenance, managing the system through a mobile application and providing user assistance services.
The local councils, for their part, undertake to carry out the electrical infrastructure works required to power the equipment, including, where necessary, increasing electrical capacity and legalising the installations. They will also be responsible for electricity consumption, external cleaning and maintenance of the surrounding public space, as well as the management of abandoned items left within the parking facilities.
Through this initiative, the Consorci de Transports de Mallorca and the participating municipalities are taking a further step towards promoting more sustainable mobility by encouraging the combined use of bicycles or scooters and public transport, while providing new facilities for citizens. The installation of secure parking facilities at strategic points on the interurban network will help reduce reliance on private vehicles and advance towards a more efficient, safer and environmentally sustainable transport model.
