The role of the railway in Mallorca’s economic transformation takes centre stage in a new SFM lecture at the Términus building next Wednesday

Serveis Ferroviaris de Mallorca (SFM) is organizing a new lecture next Wednesday the 15th at the Términus building, where the role of the railway in Mallorca’s economic transformation between 1875 and 1975 will be analysed.
The session, entitled “Mallorca on Rails: Railways and Economic Growth (1875–1975)”, will be delivered by historian Ramón Molina, PhD, next Wednesday, 15 April at 6:00 p.m. at the Términus building (Plaça d’Espanya, 5).
During the lecture, the main reasons behind the construction of the railway in Mallorca and its contribution to the island’s economic development will be explained. The connection with the Port of Palma and the parallel growth of both infrastructures enabled the Mallorcan economy to integrate into the international market.
This process encouraged the creation of a more integrated domestic market, facilitating both exports and imports and positioning Mallorca as one of the most economically advanced societies in the country during that period.
The speaker, Ramón Molina (Palma, 1955), holds a PhD in History and is emeritus professor at the University of the Balearic Islands (UIB), specialising in contemporary economic history and the evolution of the Balearic economy.
The lecture will also address the economic model shift brought about by the development of tourism from the second half of the 20th century onwards, as well as the new mobility needs generated by this process.
This initiative forms part of the conference programme promoted by SFM to raise awareness of the history and the social and economic importance of the railway in Mallorca.
