SFM opens the new Greco Street overpass next to Verge de Lluc station

The structure has been completely rebuilt and circulation and accessibility beneath the railway line have been improved with two traffic lanes and a pedestrian walkway

Serveis Ferroviaris de Mallorca (SFM) has today opened the new railway overpass above Greco Street, next to Verge de Lluc station in Palma, following the completion of refurbishment works carried out by the public railway operator, which is under the Regional Ministry of Housing, Territory and Mobility of the Government of the Balearic Islands.

The project involved the complete replacement of the former structure with a new overpass designed to improve traffic conditions beneath the railway line. Although the previous situation did not affect the safety of rail operations, a preventive intervention was undertaken in order to renew the infrastructure and adapt it to current mobility needs, resulting in both a functional and aesthetic improvement to the area.

This project forms part of the Government’s priority of strengthening railway safety across the network through continued investment in infrastructure and preventive works aimed at guaranteeing the wellbeing and protection of all users, both of the railway service and the surrounding urban environment. In this regard, SFM continues to modernise and adapt its facilities to meet current standards of mobility, accessibility and safety.

The new structure increases the available clearance space and widens the lower section, which now includes two traffic lanes for vehicles and a sufficiently wide pedestrian walkway.

This new configuration allows two-way traffic circulation beneath the bridge and improves safety and accessibility conditions in this area of the Verge de Lluc neighbourhood.

Works began at the end of the summer of 2025 and were completed at the beginning of 2026. During construction, technically complex operations were carried out which required temporary adjustments to rail services, including modifications to train circulation on certain sections of the network.

The most significant stage of the project took place over a weekend in November, when the former bridge was demolished and the new structural elements were installed. These works required the temporary suspension of rail services on a specific section of the line, with replacement bus services introduced in collaboration with EMT Palma to guarantee passenger mobility.

The project represented an investment of €889,430 (excluding VAT) and was financed through the insularity factor funds established under the Special Regime for the Balearic Islands.
